12 Days that will change your life!
Taking a Permaculture Design Course is the best tool available for those who wish to take responsibility for the need to become more resilient and self-reliant. Not just for individual or family self-reliance, but more particularly for communities and bio-regions. The context within which we teach this course will be around our belief that in the coming years we will urgently need to develop parallel economies that will have the resilience to cope with the likely power-down that our mainstream economy is faced with.
Permaculture is a comprehensive ecological design system that addresses the “why, how and what” and empowers both individuals and communities to empower change. Come and learn the “tools” you will need to engage in the coming change, from a team who are committed to being the change we wish to see in the world.
Every year we run a Summer ”Permaculture Design Certificate” course which is held in February. These are intensive twelve day courses covering the curriculum recognised by the International Permaculture Research Institute, plus much more including:
- the latest on nutrition (Weston A. Price Foundation and epigenetics)
- the Pattern Language work of Christopher Alexander
- the entrepreneurial approach of Joel Salatin, and the Savory Institute
- the latest on regenerative agriculture
- the latest in the world-wide movement of developing cooperatives and reclaiming our commons
You will receive a solid practical foundation in the permaculture design process including:
- the confidence and experience to start designing straight away
- a strong framework to continue improving your knowledge and skill base
- the understanding that permaculture has lots of opportunity for creating livelihoods
- a life changing personal experience
- a strong experience of living within an existing permaculture community
- Networks into new opportunities both in NZ and overseas
Time will be spent on theory, practicing design work and a wide range of practical activities, highlighting key strategies (Bio-intensive gardening, waste recycling, appropriate technology, food processing and preservation, small animal management).
You will live simply in community, and in a close relationship with our current permaculture ways. Past students comments at the end of our courses always stress that it is this experience they find most transforming. You can read student feedback on our courses below.
The welcome will commence at 4:30pm on Sunday, so please arrive any time from 3:00pm onwards, allowing you time to set up your tent/sleeping space and get settled.
The plan for Sunday is:
5:00pm Tea and walk facilities together
7:00pm Introduction circle
The course starts with a thorough understanding of the Permaculture model of design, (the first two days). From day three you will begin practicing; observation, analysis and design within a permaculture framework (in the real world), and getting feedback and support from our team of experienced tutors and practicing designers.
In addition those who are serious about completing a diploma, and/or engaging in design as a vocation (both in NZ or overseas), and/or creating self-employment, using their new design skills, will be supported to set in place a mentor program for supporting their future work. The Permaculture Design Course gives each of us the tools to design our dream, and the inspiration to bring it into our, and others, lives in a practical way.
Meals Included Here at Koanga we are very aware of how important food is to eco-systems, people, cultures, communities and ultimately our health.
All food served on our courses is:

We will not be catering for food preference or intolerance. If you have any concerns regarding this please contact us with your queries firstname.lastname@example.org so we can further discuss.
Camping Facilities Included We have set this workshop up so you are able to camp onsite and use our facilities. You’re also welcome to stay somewhere in Wairoa at your own cost, if you prefer. If you are coming from far away and wish to arrive the night before and leave the day after the workshop you will need to let us know. Usually people arrange their own food and their own cooking facilities during this time.

Please note: The course will be confirmed four weeks before it begins. If circumstances prevent the PDC from going ahead, enrolment fees will be refunded in full.

Cancellation Policy: Students who cancel their place at a workshop with more than four weeks notice will be given an 85% refund, however cancellations after this time can only be refunded 50% of the course fee. Cancellations with less than 48 hours, no refund can be given.
