Canna edulis is related to the ornamental cannas. The foliage is almost the same as the ornamental types and the flowers are smaller although they are attractive plants.
It produces large, swollen tubers than can be chopped and cooked as a vegetable (although they require a long cooking time) or made into arrowroot to use as a thickener.
Suitable in most soil types and is frost tender. Needs a sunny spot or a little shade if in a very hot climate. Prefers regular moisture and does not tolerate drought. Perfect for growing on the edge of a subtropical orchard.
