General Manager - Koanga Institute


An exciting opportunity exists to join the Koanga Institute, as the General Manager. You'll be working alongside Kay Baxter (CEO), managing a dedicated team of staff engaged in seed production, plant material licenses, research and education, as well as a dynamic online retail store and wholesale business.

Areas of Responsibility

  • Ensuring all work is in alignment with Koanga Institute kaupapa

  • Produce an annual plan for management of annual budget.

  • Management of employment contracts and job descriptions.

  • Management of legal contracts and licenses.

  • Working with an annual plan, producing monthly reports and remaining accountable for management of resources and productivity.

  • Monitoring all marketing, production and administration

  • Human Resource Management


This is an amazing opportunity to work for a unique organisation dedicated to the preservation of our heritage seed collection, education, research, and bringing forward positive solutions to encourage New Zealanders to live sustainably with a high degree of self reliance. The Koanga Institute is in an exciting phase of development, expanding our education program, developing our retail business and reaching an international audience within the global permaculture network.

The Koanga Institute is situated within a developing Permaculture Village (Kotare Village: www.communitylandtrusts.co.nz) so this position is a fantastic opportunity for someone who would like to be part of this community. The Koanga Institute is located in Northern Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

The successful applicant will be energetic and passionate about what we're doing, and be able to take full responsibility for their important role at Koanga. You'll need to have prior management experience, budgets and financial management. This role is dynamic and requires flexibility and a creative attitude to find solutions! Effective organisation skills and communication will be vital to this role. We need someone who has the experience and creativity who can help us develop while ensuring stability through a period of growth. We're looking for someone who has the drive to work hard and the motivation to be the change they wish to see in the world, who has excellent people skills and who can effectively manage a team of part time employees, contractors and volunteers.
