Gig's Pitcairn

Gig's Pitcairn pumpkin

(C.maxima )

NZ Heritage

In overseas catalogues this one is called Pink Banana, and is a large, long, pink skinned banana shaped squash, that was widely enjoyed around the Pacific in the past. This has come to us via the Takitimu family whose ancestors grew it on Pitcairn Island. It grows huge, needs a lot of space , and the pumpkins are late to harvest but store well. To my embarrassment I didn't even try eating them when we grew them because they were just so big but now I find out via Seed Savers information in the USA that they have outstanding flavour and texture! I'll definately eat them next time. (15)
