German Sugar: climbing; shellout, dry

(P. vulgaris )

NZ Heritage

These beans came to us from the Nelson area from AR Wenzel who has had the beans in her family for 100 years, but came originally to NZ in the 19th C with a German ancestor of hers. They have short pods, which can be eaten when young and flat and green but they are best as shellout beans if picked when the beans are at their fattest. The beans are very fat and round and white.
