These Koanga Institute trees have been collected over the past 24 years. Almost all of them have come from old gardens and orchards around northern New Zealand and have been given to Koanga Institute by families who regard them as Taonga. We have grown all of these trees organically in our selection blocks and home orchards in a wild mixed herbal ley environment.
Each year some of the trees in the collection are available to purchase from the Koanga Gardens Fruit Tree Catalogue www.koanga.co.nz
In addition this range of exciting heritage genetic material is available to Koanga Institute members so that you can grow your own home orchard, or put in an organic orchard especially suited for selling fruit at a farmer's Market or Community Supported Agriculture.
This material is not for commercial nurseries to use, we have our own licenced nurseries who, in return for the work we do, pay us a royalty, which means we are then able to continue our preservation work.
Each year we are able to add more cultivars to our lists.
If you know of a special fruit tree that:
- is North of the Bombay Hills
- tastes good
-
is disease resistant
- is particularly suited to home growers
and you’d like us to hold it in our collection and eventually include it in these lists, please let us know...we will send you a questionnaire to fill in about your tree or you can access the form here.
We have listed all fruit trees in order of ripening within their category as far as we are able.
