Building Apprenticeship

A primary focus of the Institute is determining strategies and techniques for building and appropriate technology that align with our overall vision.

We are currently researching:-

  • light earth building techniques
  • passive heat storage and transfers for space heating and food drying
  • rocket stoves for cooking, water heating and space heating
  • green house design
  • cooling facilities
  • water filtering and enhancement
  • used water recycling
  • a range of  'permaculture' related  building techniques and appropriate technologies for sustainable living
  • how best to work with the 'regulatory' systems in place.

Over the next two years we will be incorporating these ideas into the building of the new Institute apprentice office/shop/education facilities, accommodation, as well as building an autonomous family home.  While we are doing this, we are offering the opportunity of an apprenticeship in ‘autonomous building’, to someone who wishes to commit to learning about these applications and using them out in the world.

That person will already have building experience and qualifications, and be interested and capable of managing a team of volunteers and interns.  They will be self motivated and willing to take responsibility for projects.  For the duration of the apprenticeship, the Institute will provide you with food, basic amenities and a small stipend.

This role will develop into a leadership/ teaching role, so you must have a desire to live the change that you'd like to see in the world.

The opportunity also exists to establish a mentored business serving the needs of the Permaculture community, after the initial training period.

We would expect a trial period of 3 months before a long-term relationship is developed and we are open to creating the shape of the apprenticeship around both of our needs and situations.
